PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY:
Courfeyrac had, in fact, that animation of youth which may be called the beaute du diable of the mind. Later on, this disappears like the playfulness of the kitten, and all this grace ends, with the bourgeois, on two legs, and with the tomcat, on four paws.
At first glance, it would be easy for one to assume Courfeyrac is a superficial gentleman. He enjoys taking care of himself; that is, he dresses well, has plenty of leisurely pursuits and hobbies, and has a healthy appetite for matters of a carnal nature. In short, Courfeyrac is described as a dandy- and for good reason. It is undeniable that Courfeyrac does take delight in such pleasures that one might deem luxuriant, and one could easily mistake him for being shallow; however, were one to get to know Courfeyrac they would see that there is much, much more to him than these superficial leisures.

Some would find it perhaps strange, then, to learn that Courfeyrac fights for l’ABC- or, for the debased. A man who could easily find himself in the company of the bourgeoisie instead chooses to fight against the injustices he perceives, and not simply because it is what his friends choose as well, but because he truly believes in their cause; in equality for every man, from the lowest commoner to the greatest monarch. This demonstrates that at his core, Courfeyrac is a good, caring man. He cannot simply turn a blind eye to the plight of the poor because he recognizes how unfair it truly is, and so sets his mind to being one of the people to aid in changing this.

No one will deny for an instant that Courfeyrac is incredibly charming. He has a way with words and a strong understanding of social situations to a point that he can be a little bit manipulative. He is easy-going and it makes him accessible to people. He is the sort of man who would be friends with anyone, regardless of social standing, class, or political importance. Courfeyrac is a social creature by nature, and if the situation calls for it he is more than willing to use this aspect of his personality to further his goals- whether they be for himself, or for the Cause. However, just because Courfeyrac can be manipulative does not at all make him selfish. There is a genuine friendliness to Courfeyrac- a spark, a desire to please that extends beyond the mere whims and fancies of his own desires.

It is also a well known fact that Courfeyrac is a notorious flirt. As mentioned previously he is a dandy; he quite enjoys the company of women, and this serves a twofold purpose. Firstly, it satisfies in boosting his ego. Second, it helps him in dealing with the heavier and more stressful matters in his life. It serves as both a distraction, and an outlet for energies that he otherwise wouldn’t know how to deal with. However, for all of his flirting and liaisons with women Courfeyrac isn’t inclined to settle down with any one woman. In fact- while he often comments on what sort of woman he would like to ‘add to his collection’ he very rarely remembers their faces, or their names. It isn’t intentional, and he doesn’t forget out of harm but he recognizes that he is at the heart of him, a flirt, a dandy, and a happily single man.

In times of stress he remains cheerful and positive; a coping mechanism and a deflection. It isn’t necessarily always the healthiest of avenues, but it is what works for him. He often chooses not to acknowledge that he is stressed, or afraid, and when he does it is not without attaching some sort of jibe or smart remark to soften the seriousness. It’s not that Courfeyrac doesn’t have the ability to take things seriously, it’s simply that he needs to deal with serious matters in a light-hearted manner, lest he break. That said, some things become too much for even Courfeyrac. Fearing for his life, taking other lives, watching his friends die before him, facing the truth of his own death, these were things that wore Courfeyrac’s usual defenses away, and affected him on a deep level, and in Exit Void will continue to do so. Despite this, Courfeyrac is also a considerably brave fellow. He knowingly follows his friends to his death in the hopes of achieving a better tomorrow. He believes with all his heart that they died doing the right thing, and for his friends, for a brighter future, he would gladly sacrifice himself again.
“Enjolras was the chief, Combeferre was the guide, Courfeyrac was the centre. The others gave more light, he shed more warmth; the truth is, that he possessed all the qualities of a centre, roundness and radiance.”
Courfeyrac cannot be explained without also explaining what he represents to Les Amis de l’ABC. Where Enjolras is the chief, the leader and the revolutionary fire, and Combeferre the philosophy, the man to talk Enjolras down and the pacifist, Courfeyrac represents the balance of both. He helps to hold them together and brings all of les Amis together. As previously mentioned, Courfeyrac is a social creature- easy to befriend, and loyal to those he names his friends.

These friendships and bonds are deeply important to Courfeyrac, and despite his first impressions of being shallow and perhaps even self-absorbed, at the heart of him Courfeyrac is actually incredibly selfless (evidenced by his willingness to die for not only his friends- but the hope of equality, the hope of a better tomorrow) and honourable. When Marius finds himself in a time of need, without a home, or very much money even to his name it is Courfeyrac who insists he stay with him. Courfeyrac is also the man who introduces Marius to Les Amis de l’ABC, and although Courfeyrac teases Marius quite heavily, it is never maliciously. He cares deeply for the other and would do almost anything to aid him. The same can be said of the other members of Les Amis. Courfeyrac cares for them all deeply, he is happy to stand for them, fight for them, and defend them however he can.

To speak of defense, one must also know that Courfeyrac is extremely sharp witted. He is quick thinking, and always has a remark at the ready if a situation calls for it. Especially a situation where he might tease, or unsettle Marius. He greatly enjoys the use of language as a weapon, and he wields it like an expert. He loves puns, and- for lack of a better term- is incredibly sassy when he wants to be. There’s nothing Courfeyrac enjoys more than an argument of wits, which is probably part of why he chooses to be a law student.
Courfeyrac put no questions to him. He did not even think of such a thing. At that age, faces disclose everything on the spot. Words are superfluous. There are young men of whom it can be said that their countenances chatter. One looks at them and one knows them.
ABILITIES: Courfeyrac has no supernatural abilities to speak of. He is familiar with the workings of 19th century guns and weaponry. He's also well acquainted with bayonets (several of his friends were killed with them after all) but he is not an expert with any of these. Instead, his primary skills are the ones he uses to charm the stripes off a tiger. He has a silver tongue to do battle with words snd whit which he wields with expertise. His tongue has other skills as well, but those are best not discussed in polite company.

POSSESSIONS: Stained, bloody and torn clothing as seen here and here. The clothing of his final moments.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
He died.

He's dead.

He remembers dying-

Yet he lives, he breathes-

He knows, though. At the end of the day, he knows.

Courfeyrac is dead.

At first, he'd thought it was merely a smell of the ship. Faint, but to him, pervasive. He'd wanted so badly to believe it was the ship, even when he knew better. Even when he scrubbed himself red and raw and still it lingered. Others couldn't seem to notice, but he knows. Even in denial, he knows.

It keeps him up at night, the constant reminder that he tries to cover with soaps and perfumes and whatever else he's managed to salvage or find on the ship. He denies it, because it helps to do so, but he still knows. The thought of it is still too great- to come to terms with his death. With the death of his friends. To remember his death is to remember theres, and to remember is to accept...

He may never see them again.

He is blessed, Marius is here, Enjolras too- yet, so long as he breathes, he cannot accept it.

He locks it away instead. In a dark place deep inside his heart where denial lives and breathes just as strongly as he himself. He smiles, he laughs and loves as fiercely as he lived despite the dangers here. Perhaps more so, because of the dangers here and, maybe to make up for the ones he misses with every breath, with every beat of his heart and the smell he hopes his mind has only manufactured reminds him every moment. It makes him ache, and when he closes his eyes at night beneath his eyelids flash blank, dead stares. Cries of pain, cries for help. So it keeps him up at night.

Some say there is nothing worse than death.

Courfeyrac disagrees.

The worst thing is dying, only to be resurrected and to live without the light and warmth of ones dearest friends. He is a puzzle incomplete; pieces missing leaving behind a fractured portrait.

He covers the cracks as best he can, in the only way he knows how.

He laughs.
